We Believe In Fighting For Civil Rights

About Our Firm And Law Practice

At Ives & Flores, P.A., we are here to help you and to advance civil liberties for all New Mexicans. Our firm is a source of information and advocacy for New Mexico residents who have experienced harm and losses through negligence and the violation of civil rights. Laura and Adam have brought groundbreaking litigation on behalf of clients, including persuading the state supreme court to recognize the right to same-sex marriage in New Mexico, expanding the categories of people who can recover damages from state and local governments, increasing public access to law enforcement records under the state’s transparency laws, and litigating often unused, but unique provisions of the New Mexico Constitution, including the Victims Rights Amendment and the Equal Rights Amendment. With this creative and thoughtful approach to litigation, Laura and Adam have secured excellent results in difficult cases and made millions of dollars for their civil rights clients.

Our clients turn to us for counsel after:

  • Losing loved ones to wrongful death
  • Suffering the indignities of sexual abuse
  • Having their civil rights violated
  • Experiencing employment discrimination or retaliation

The entire team at Ives & Flores, P.A. has been carefully selected to ensure the highest quality legal services. Each client has a dedicated attorney working on their case, but they also benefit from our commitment to teamwork. We work together on your behalf, and we do everything we can to get you the best result.

Introducing The Team

Allow us to introduce you to our attorneys and paralegals who work to protect the rights of all New Mexicans. Learn about some of our team members’ backgrounds and qualifications through these links:

Laura Schauer Ives, Partner: Growing up, Laura marveled as her mother, a public defender, stood as the sole obstacle between the individual and the immense power of the state. Laura took to heart the lessons that there is value in being the voice for those who may not otherwise be heard.

Adam C. Flores, Partner: Adam’s passion is civil rights. He works to preserve the rights of New Mexicans who have been victimized by police misconduct and other profound abuses.

Martha Mulvany, Attorney: Martha had the good fortune to work first at the law firm of Freedman, Boyd, Daniels, Hollander & Goldberg, and then at the New Mexico Court of Appeals, where she was a senior staff attorney. She served on the New Mexico Supreme Court Rules of Appellate Procedure Committee, and more.

Alyssa Quijano, Attorney: Alyssa Quijano, a New Mexico native, received her Bachelor of Arts and her law degree from the University of New Mexico. Alyssa became involved in the world of criminal defense beginning in high school, working as a legal assistant for a contract public defender.

Henry Jones, Attorney: Henry A. Jones graduated from the University of New Mexico School of Law in 2017. He served a one-year term as a judicial law clerk for United States District Judge James O. Browning.

Alissa Barnes, Paralegal: Alissa Barnes has worked in the legal field for 18 years. She has worked for Laura Schauer Ives in the field of civil rights litigation since 2013. Fighting to protect New Mexican’s civil liberties has become a huge part of Alissa’s life.

Sylvia Aquirre, Paralegal: Sylvia has been a paralegal since 1994 and has dedicated her career to helping those who have fallen victim to our legal system. She began her career with the Felony Unit of the Public Defender’s office in Albuquerque.

Alexandra Quijano, Legal Assistant: Alexandra has been working in the legal field for 12 years in various areas of law. She received her bachelor’s degrees from the University of New Mexico in anthropology and East Asian studies.

Professional, Supportive And Thorough

We are committed to handling each case with skill, integrity and compassion, as described below.

Compensation For Wrongful Death

When we help clients pursue wrongful death claims, we navigate the legal processes on their behalf, investigate potential negligence and hold wrongdoers responsible to compensate surviving close family members. We are here to help.

While we cannot bring your loved one back, the laws of New Mexico allow you to pursue compensation, including damages for pain and suffering, and for your loss of the companionship, society, love and affection of the deceased. If we represent you in this type of case, we will work hard to hold the liable party or parties accountable to the full extent of the law.

Justice For Sex Abuse

We represent survivors of sex abuse at every stage in the process to healing. Sex abuse cases involve ongoing psychological trauma, but by taking legal action, you can claim a path to empowerment. Work with an attorney who knows how to protect your rights and your privacy, or the rights and privacy of your child, throughout this process. Other attorneys may downplay the harm suffered by survivors of sexual abuse and undervalue these cases. We do not.

We serve as victims’ advocates in the criminal process and ensure that victims’ rights are protected in accordance with the New Mexico Constitution.

Discrimination: Holding Employers Accountable

The workplace is the frontline in the fight for equality. Though women and minorities should be fairly paid, respected and treated with dignity at work, it is no secret that many are habitually underpaid and subjected to harassment and exploitation. State and federal laws prohibit discrimination and retaliation at work, but navigating these cases can be complicated. Timing and exhaustion requirements may bar your claim, and even worse, your employer may try to retaliate against you if you are still working when you assert your rights.

We know how to protect whistleblowers and preserve employees’ rights. We will insist on your right to pursue compensation in a court of law, if necessary.

Standing Up For Civil Rights

The New Mexico Civil Rights Act, which took effect in the summer of 2021, has vastly expanded awareness of civil rights of all New Mexicans. In this area of the law, we are recognized professionals with strong records on behalf of our clients.

We will investigate your case, seek maximum damages for the harm you have suffered, and take your case to trial if the party at fault refuses to accept responsibility.

Our Commitment Is To You

We hope to see you find a legal solution to the problem that brought you here. An initial consultation is a solid start – and it’s free.
